I get an IRPStackSize event log every time I start Windows 2000.

A. I've seen this on all my Windows 2000 installations and its caused if the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters\IRPStackSize is less than 11.

To correct the problem perform the following:

  1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)
  2. Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
  3. Double click on IRPStackSize
  4. Set the type to decimal and enter 11. Click OK
  5. Close the registry editor

You can also run the reg file at http://www.ntfaq.com/misc/fixirpstacksize.reg to fix it for you.

It is my understanding that Norton Antivirus is guilty of changing this to an invalid value.

I noticed that when I uninstall Adaptec's Easy CD Creator 4.02d and DirectCD 3.01d on Windows 2000, this value is also changed to an invalid number. First time when I uninstalled them (revision d), the value was set to 4294967294 (!). The second time I uninstalled revision e, and the value was set to 9. Even they can't seem to find the correct value - but fortunately changing it to 11 manually corrects the error :)
